Unable to logon to Recovery Console

After downloading an update to WinXP Home Version, an
error message says unable to load msdina.dll. Tried to use
Recovery Console, but unable to logon. Although no
password was ever created for administrator, hitting Enter
without a password results in another prompt for a
password. Short of reinstalling XP, is there a way to get
into Recovery Console?

Why not boot from the XP CD and do a repair reinstallation rather than
Recovery Console? (And did you make the recovery floppy(s) that are needed
for Recovery Console?)

What? Floppies are required to run RC? That's news to me. I had RC open this morning without using floppies.

Tom, so set a password for the admin account. To open the admin account in home » boot XP, while it is booting press F8, start in "safe mode", click on the admin account and set a password. Reboot XP and install the RC to your HDD » open run and type "X:\I386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons" (X=your CD drive) » press ok. After it is installed open it to make sure it works.

Install RC (cmdcons) now because when SP2 becomes available you will not be able to install RC after installing SP2.
