Unable to login

I was attempting to setup a home network with my new computer. Old computer
is running Windows 2000 Professional. After adding the new network connection
on old computer, I was prompted to reboot (which I did) and now I cant login.
"Windows could not log you on...".

Try booting into safe mode and if that does not work try last known good
configuration. You can access the alternate startup menu by repeatedly
tapping the F8 key while the computer is booting and before it starts the
operating system. --- Steve

Even in safe mode, I get prompted for username and password and it wont
accept it. Last known good configuration was initial purchase configuration
(1998). As you can imagine, I have upgraded many times since then. Windows 98
came on the machine, but then I upgraded to Windows 2000 Professional. Any
other ideas? How can I boot up as administrator or boot up ignoring the
network?

It seems your issue is not the network but the lack of an alternative
admin account / password. It's like driving a car with a single set of
keys. One little mishap and you're locked out of your own car!

Reboot the machine with a boot disk from the link below, use it
to reset the administrator's password to a blank, then plan ahead
and create a secondary admin account and lock the password
away in a safe place.
