Unable to login to XP from the network

I have several machines networked together on a common hub. Some of the
systems are using Windows 2000, and the others are using XP Pro SP2. All of
the systems have the same administrator password. The latest acquisition is
an HP, which came loaded with XP Pro SP2. I can see the system in the
network, but I cannot log in to this machine using any login or password,
except from the console. I can, however, see and use the shared drives and
printers. I have seen this kind of problem with Windows 98 systems, but not
on NT-based systems.

I have set it up to use the same workgroup as the rest of the systems. I
can log in to any other system from the new machine, without getting a
prompt. My other XP systems don't have this problem, and I can't figure out
what's wrong. All the accounts and permissions seem to be correct. Disabling
the firewall does nothing.

Precisely what do you get or see when you "cannot log in to this machine using
any login or password"?

If you're depending upon an administrator password, have you Disabled Simple
File Sharing:

Thanks for the quick reply, Chuck.

I don't have that machine in front of me, but I am being prompted for a user
name and password. No matter what I enter, I am unable to log in. I will
look to
see if simple file sharing is enabled, but why would that disable network
login?
I didn't set this machine up, so I don't know all the settings.

Hi Fish,

File sharing in Windows XP is very complicated. That's why I wrote my article,
which should begin to explain the possibilities.

If the computer uses Guest authentication, which is a feature of SFS, trying to
authenticate with any non-Guest account will result in your problem. As will
trying to authenticate with Guest, if Guest is not properly activated.

Hi, again, Chuck. I haven't been able to get to these groups for a couple of
days. Yes, SFS is enabled on the problem system, and the Guest account is
disabled. However, those settings are also present on the other XP system in
that workgroup. My question is whether I fix this through the users applet
in the control panel or by the Sharing and Security menu. Once again, the
problem system is not in front of me. I don't want to leave open shares on
the network; I'm firewalled in the router, and I have WPA enabled on my
access point, but you never know.

I'll tinker with it when I get home. Thanks again.

Fish,

OK, if you have SFS and a disabled Guest account, that is definitely one
problem, so start by fixing that. Then work on any other problems.
