Unable To Log You On Because Of An Account Restriction

My laptop (Sony Vaio) running on Windows XP Home Edition was hit with a virus
called SVEHOST.EXE. In the process of cleaning it, I switched off the laptop
to restart. Upon restarting, I was prompted for a password to the laptop.
Mind you, all accounts on this laptop initially did not have password set.
All accounts on the laptops have being password protected including the
Administrator Account thus restricting access.
I've tried logon in safe mode with Administrator account but with same
result (Asking for a password).
Without having to reinstall Windows XP, is their a way to have access to my
laptop?

There are solutions out there to reset the admin password. The best of these
would be a system restore to a point prior to the original infection if
known, then to do system updates like mad untill get back up to speed. Since
you can't log into safe mode and perform a system (weird - didn't think safe
mode asked for passwords) I would suggest doing a system restore from the
Windows XP CD that came with your computer.

Alternatively a quick google search for xp password reset will find links to
tools to create Linux boot discs that can manipulate the password files. This
will reset the admin password to one of your chosing, however you will
PERMANENTLY lose access to EFS encrypted files, including any IE stored
passwords.

I have had to resort to this on a few occasions, and now keep a floppy
already setup to handle this. This only affects local passwords, and won't
work if the laptop is part of a domain. You also need a second computer to be
able to create the boot floppy/cd from, but since your posting here I'm
assuming you have access to that ;)

Thanks

Have you tried typing in your name in the login line? My computer
started doing the same thing, but all I have to do is type in my name
in the login line with no password. I think whoever is the
administrator of your computer is the name you use.
