Restricting Guest Account

J

Judy

I have a new Dell computer with windows XP. I have set Mozilla Firefox as my
default browser.

He guest account has access to my Bookmarks and stored passwords. The wondow
is exactly the same as when I open it in my own account.

I want to have a guest account for occasional visitors, but do not want them
to have access to my bookmarks and PW's. I've gone through the help screens,
but cannot see where to restrict.

Simple solution, don't use the Guest account. Disable it and create a
limited user account that's dedicated for just this purpose. Call the
account Visitor. Since it's a limited account it will not have access to any
of your files. Should you want to share files with this account, they can be
placed in the Shared Documents folder.

Good luck

Hi,
I deleted the guest account and set up a new limited account as suggested.
When I open up Firefox all of my bookmarks are there???

Just out of curiosity, do you know if anyone may have copied the contents of
your user account folder into this folder?

C:\Documents and Settings\Default User

If that occurred, it might account for why new accounts have the same
bookmarks as your account.

I'm no expert on Firefox, but I do know that your individual files are
located in this folder (substituting the correct user name where it says
'YourAccount').

C:\Documents and Settings\'YourAccount'\Application
Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

There should be a folder for the new account in the corresponding location
under its Documents and Settings folder.

You might want to run a test. Log on with your account. Open Firefox and
create a new bookmark. Close Firefox, log off, and log on with the new
limited user account. Open Firefox and check the bookmarks. Is the new one
there? Keep testing by creating and deleting bookmarks under your account
and seeing if that action is duplicated in the limited account. That would
mean that for some reason both accounts are sharing the same
Firefox\Profiles\folder. If that's the case, you'll need to seek guidance
from someone in a Firefox newsgroup. OTOH, if you find that the results of
your tests are not duplicated in the new account, you might want to consider
backing up the bookmarks for your account. Log on with the limited account
and delete those you don't want available for that account. As for your
passwords, you might want to check with someone in a Firefox newsgroup for
how that can be cleared up.

Good luck

Hi,
Your last post was really helpful in terms of a troubleshooting methodology.
I had checked the privacy settings, the profile was restricted to my own
user. When I made any changes to the bookmarks for either myself or the
restricted the other user, they were not updating each other. So, I deleted
all of the bookmarks in the new account ant that took care of the issue.

No one else has used the computer. I copied my profile from my old computer.
I suspect that in doing that, somehow I made it available to all users.

Thanks so much, you have been a big help. You may not be an expert in
Firefox, but you're an expert in troubleshooting ;-)

Thanks for taking the time to let us know you were able to fix the issues
you were having with your Firefox bookmarks.
