Unable to load WinXP sp2

At startup, WinXP hangs up just after the "boot from cd" option and freezes.
(in other words, I do not get to the XP logo window). I have managed to get
an error message "Setupreg.hiv in the [Sourcediskfiles] sector of the INF
file is corrupt or missing." I am unable to boot using the original winxp
disk or by using Acronis True Image, my backup software. This has happened
in the past and I have been able to "fix" the problem by turning off the
power to the PC and adsl router, then starting everything up again, but not
this time. I am pretty sure it is not a virus having done a comprehensive
check a few hours earlier.

What does this have to do with Win XP SP2 as in your title?

Are you trying to boot from XP SP2 cd?

What happens when you try to boot to Win XP cd?

Do you have a bootable cd in the drive?

reset bios to boot from HDD.

The PC normally runs Win Xp and starts up as normal, but sometimes it just
hangs as explained in first post. Unable to boot from system disk, or other
methods.
Hope that clarifys things more.

why is computer set to boot to cd?
why does it say boot to cd?

What happens when you try to boot with "system disk"?
What do you mean by "system disk"?

Describe with some detail how you are trying to boot with system disk.

If you don't provide some more detail it is real hard to help you!!!

What install software do yuo have?
Is software MFG OEM software?
What is make and model of computer?

It isn't set to that, when windows starts up it shows a number of messages
and options upto the time the Windows xp screen shows. One message is about
booting with a cd (shows for about 3 seconds, then moves on). Its just an
option that is useful if Windows does not start properly.

When I try to use the system disk it indicates that
windows\system32\config\system is missing or corrupt. If I try to start in
safe mode, I eventually get setupreg.hiv in the section of the INF file is
corrupt or missing.

So after 3 posts, you have finally (although not stated as such or directly
answered my question) defined system disk as the HDD with your system files,
I guess.

Also, you "finally" stated your problem as "When I try to use the system
disk it indicates that windows\system32\config\system is missing or
corrupt".
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_sys32.htm
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545&sd=RMVP

Getting info from you is like pulling teeth. Also, still haven't explained
how this relates to OP as "RE:Unable to load WinXP SP2!!!.

other than what I have just given ,you have exhausted my desire to help.
good luck.
