Unable to join 2000 domain

I am trying to join an XP Pro box to a 2000 domain. I am
prompted for the user account with permissions to do this,
but after I enter the administrator account I receive an
error message that says, "The specified server cannot
perform the requested operation". TCP/IP is the only
protocol installed and all of the TCP/IP settings are
correct including DNS. I have only 1 domain controller and
it is the only DNS server. Any ideas.
