Unable to install TCP/IP

O

Ollie

Hello,
I am working with an XP Home system that gets "an
operation was attempted on something that is not a
socket". I followed the instructions in Q318584, but I
am still unable to reinsatll the TCP/IP protocols. When
you go the network properties and click on the TCP/IP
line the "Uninstall" button stays greyed out, which tells
me there is nothing to uninstall. I tried to use the CD,
but there is nothing to install under support\tools\NET.
This system had -625 spy software files that I cleaned.

How can I re install the TCP/IP protocols?

Thanks a lot

Hi Ollie,

Open regedit and export the two following keys for safe keeping. Then delete them from the registry.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

After deleting the two keys you must reboot. (Very important).

Once you reboot go to Network connections and open the properties for your conneciton.
Click on Install.
Choose Protocol and hit Add
On the next Window click on Have Disk
On the next screen type in c:\windows\inf (assuming you installed XP on C and you have a windows folder).
Click ok.
On the next screen choose Internet Protocol/TCPIP
This should fix your winsock problem.

Please advise how this worked out.
