Unable to install Office 2003 SBE on Windows XP SP2

I upgraded my Win XP system to SP2 a couple of days ago and everything was
working great (even ZoneAlarm because I disabled the built-in Windows
firewall). I tried to install Office 2003 SBE today and am receiving an error
indicating "Office 2003 - This version is not compatable with your system.".
I spoke to Gateway tech support (manufacturer of the laptop and OEM of the
software) and they suggested I remove SP2 and try again. I have now removed
SP2 but continue to receive the same error when I attempt to install the
software (everything else continues to work flawlessly). I have been unable
to locate any information on this or similar errors in the MS TechNet KB nor
across the Internet. Has anyone else encountered this and discovered any way
past it without having to reformat the hard drive and start over from
scratch? Please note that during the installation process I shut down
ZoneAlarm and all other unneccessary programs so they would not interfere
with the installation. I have also posted this question in the Office
newsgroup without resolution. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

This is getting worse and worse. After using Add/Remove Programs in Safe Mode
to remove SP2 I receive a zero config error and can't get to my desktop. I am
currently going through a reinstallation of the OS on top of itself via the
disks. Hoping I won't have to format the disk but getting ready for it.

Sounds like Gateway sent you the wrong language version of Office 2003.
I would suggest contacting them and make sure you receive an "English version"
if indeed you are running an English version of Windows XP.
I don't believe SP2 is causing the issue at all.

Thank you for the response. I would have agreed with you if... when I first
encountered the error I grabbed a second set of media that I had already used
to install on another Win XP SP1 system without error (also a Gateway). I
figured it didn't really matter which Gateway OEM media I used if I input the
correct key when the time came but I received the same error and this time I
know that the media itself was a known good English version. Still looking
for answers. Thanks.
