Unable to install Definition Update 1.14.1729.5

One of my Win XP Home machines repeatedly tries to install the update and
gets, "Updates were unable to be successfuly installed." each time. What can
I do?

If this machine has updated on the past, and if you are current on Windows
Update (i.e. you can do an express scan, and see nothing offered) and you
are on Windows XP (as you've stated!)--then this is how I'd proceed:

Go to a command prompt, in the Windows Defender install folder--typically,
this is \program files\windows defender.

type these two commands, hitting enter at the end of each, and waiting for
responses before continuing. The second command may take some
time--minutes--to complete, and will require Internet access:

mpcmdrun -RemoveDefinitions -All

mpcmdrun -SignatureUpdate

I am having the same problem using WinXP 64-bit / Windows Defender x64.
Windows Update brings up 1.14.1727.5 and 1.14.1729.5, but I get
installation....failed! messages for both. The error code shown in the update
history status is 0x80244018. The "Check Now" and "Check for Updates" buttons
in Windows Defender grey out for a while when I click them, then activate
again with no changes - still get a "your definitions haven't been updated in
271 days" warning and an orange "!" in the systray Windows Defender icon.

I am behind a corporate proxy, but I use the same proxy on another PC which
updated the same defs with no problems.

I also tried the mpcmdmrun commands, but the signature update didn't seem to
work. I did not get an error, but still have the orange ! and the 271 day
warning.

I ran mpcmdmrun -GetSWE flag, and the logfile C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Support\WDSWE.txt says:
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1303.0
Signature Version: 1.0.0.0

Hello Lloyd,

It's far better to start a new post and describe your problem from the
beginning, rather than depend on someone else's description to do that, and
say "me too.

You cannot download updates when you access the Windows Update Web site from
a Windows XP-based computer that is behind a firewall or a proxy server.

Sorry.

Here's a workaround that may be more helpful, I just tried it and it worked.

go to %windir%/windowsupdate.log

Look for the last line with the last column
** START ** DnldMgr: Downloading updates [CallerId = MicrosoftUpdate]
Look for lines with the last column
WARNING: BITS job {...} failed
Two lines below each will be a URL
Failed job file: URL =
http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/...yadayada
Open IE and go to that URL. Save and Run the file.
Repeat for each WARNING: BITS job {...} failed line.

Worked for me, your mileage may vary.

If you check Engels posts in this group, he posts those URL's each time an
update is available.

I'm glad that worked--you should be able to update manually that way, but
doing so won't solve whatever is preventing the expected auto-update
mechanism from working.
