unable to install additional components in windows xp

Hi I'm hoping someone can help me with this...
every time I try to install additional components with my windows xp cd I get the following error:
windows xp setup
set-up was unable to open information file medctroc.inf.
contact your system administrator. the specific error code is 0x2 at line 2011777033.

I tried to do a repair and am only getting the option for a full install... I would really like to avoid a clean install.
any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Try replacing C:\Windows\inf\medctroc.inf with the copy found in
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386.
