Unable to install 2003 over 2000

In trying to install, I get the following message when it
is almost complete.

Error 1402. Setup cannot open the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersi
on\Run\OptionalComponents\MSFS. Verify that you have
sufficient permissions to access the registry or conact
your Information Technology department for assistance.

I have gone into the registry and all of the permissions
are enabled. I am 73 years old and retired so the only
Information Technology department I have is you guys.

Dear A. Roeder

Many thanks for your help. I tried the M.S. link you gave me since it
had exactly the error message I was receiving. Unfortunately, it
didn't work. I got exactly the same error at exactly the same place.
I may have to break down and pay the bandits another $35 to install
the thing, but I do appreciate your courtesy in sending me the link
that was right on point, and should have worked.

This procedure worked for me, however, I had to deviate from th
instructions slight bit. I was using Windows 2000. Just apply th
procedure to WHATEVER KEY is giving you the problem. For example, I wa
getting error 1402 on this key:

hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run\optioncomponents\msfs

What I did was go to the folder called "run", and set all the accoun
priviliges wide open on it, and then forced inheritance to all th
lower level folders. This caused keys I could not see before (corrupte
profile!) to appear. This then allowed reinstallation of Office t
occur.

MS shold have written the knowledgebase response to more generall
apply to WHEREEVER in the registry tree structure you are having th
problem.

This thread helped me solve a really thorny problem
