Unable to instal Flight Simulator X

Application: MS Flight Simulator X Deluxe Edition (just bought it at
Fry's... the real thing)

Problem: Windows crashes during installation process.

My system: P4-2GHz w/1GB, nVIDIA GeForce 6200 OC w/256MB & AGP 4x,
Windows XP Home SP2, DirectX 9.0c, IE7. O/S and all drivers are
current.

Hardware: Tried in a Sony DRU-720A DVR-RW and in a Litteon LTD163D
DVD-ROM.

Start-up Apps: Disabled FW, AS, AV and all other start-up aps. In
other words, I tried a clean set-up.

Details: Installation process runs normally for a while then either I
receive a BSOD (STOP 0x00000024 - no application listed, or STOP
0x000000D1 - ATAPI.SYS), then it requires a hard reboot, or the system
simply hangs (hard lock-up which requires hard reset via the switch).

Event Viewer displays Error code 1704 (improper installation per MS'
KB).
Also saw: The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block (DVD-RW & ROM
work fine with eveithing else ... up to now). Seems to say that the
DVD is flawed?
One other message type: Error code 100000d1, parameter1 0de7cdaf,
parameter2 0000000c, parameter3 00000001, parameter4 f74598cf.

Following initial try, I deleted all temp files, rebooted and tried
again.
Here is another message I noted in Event Viewer:
Product: InstallScriptMSIEngine -- Error 1704.An installation for
Microsoft Flight Simulator X is currently suspended. You must undo
the changes made by that installation to continue. Do you want to
undo those changes? As I never saw this message, I did nopt have a Y/N
choice.

Problem resolved... installation successful.

Well, after quite a bit of on-line reading, I rechecked my SONY
DRU-720A firmware and realized that it was NOT up to date (one rev
back... I could have sworn). So, I flashed the new firmware and
rebooted.

Then I deleted the files in the "temp" folder, ran MS' Installation
Clean-up Utility (msicuu2.exe) to get rid of the remnants of my
previous attempts (error 1704), rebooted and ensured that nothing was
running (well, almost).

This time the installation worked properly!

My 2 cents: This was the most complex and demanding installation I had
to perform in a long long time. Requiring DVD-RW flash updates and
other "special" considerations is IMHO way overboard.
