Computer suddenly reboots

S

Saso Zagoranski

Hi,

For the past two weeks my computer has suddenly started rebooting
during different tasks (I could be programming, browsing the web, ...).

The STOP error that I get is:
0x000000D1: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
in file TCPIP.SYS

The error started to appear on 11.11.2005 and appear once every few days
but it has already happened to me 3 times today!

I tried looking at the minidump files but to be honest, I don't know what
to make of them so I'm posting two files here.

The only thing I installed on the 11th was a Windows XP SP2 Security Update:
KB 896424.

One of the possible suspects (I'm just guessing this) could be:
avast! Antivirus (latest version - home edition)
McAfee Firewall Plus (6.1.6144)

Since they both auto-updated themselves during these two weeks.

What is also very strange to me is that I used my other computer during
the weekend and the same thing happened there too! The computer suddenly
restarted (I can't tell you the stop code because I had auto restart
enabled).
Could it be a virus?

I'm attaching 2 of the dump files (the first one and the last one).

Please help, I really wouldn't like to reformat the computer :(

thanks,
saso

hi, thanks for the reply

This doesn't really help me... since I'm not experiencing any of the
symptoms
(such as 'during startup' or 'during shutdown') and I'm not using the
software
that's listed there.

Hi,

no... I'm not using a logitech mouse.
I am using a logitech webcame. But I've been using it for months and I never
had these kinds of symptoms.

It just happened again :(

Have you done a through scan of your system with malwares using MS
antispyware Beta?

The alternative is to repair the DLL/system files from cache using
thiese steps:

a. Click Start, and then click Run.
b. In the Open box, type sfc /scannow, and then click OK.
c. You may be prompted for the Windows XP or Windows XP Service Pack 1
installation media.

I've scaned the system and there are no problems.

About your suggestion.
Wouldn't that cause problems with problems that require SP2?

If you have SP2 installed then you will need to use SP2 CD or Slipstream
SP2 with your SP0 or SP1 CD. For slipstreaming, I recommend this link:

http://www.petri.co.il/windows_xp_sp_slipstreaming.htm

The alternative may be to do a clean install of XP using your own media
and PID. This all depends on what data you have on your HD and how
readily you can copy them somewhere else. Also, you need CDs for all
your applications such as Office, Roxio, Nero etc .Did your system come
with RESTORE CD or a proper OS CD as distributed by DELL?

I am not a proponent of doing a Repair Install as it does not help
cleaning up the system to get trouble-free computing for the next 6-9
months. If you don't have the OS CD then you will need to restore your
system to facory settings and start again.

After 5 STOP screens today I gave up and restored the computer to factory
settings
and I'm currently re-installing everything.

Thanks for all the suggestions. If someone finds something out from the dump
files
I attached, please let me know. I would love to know which program/driver
did this :)

This is probably not what is causing it, but I heard the buzzing sound of my
cell phone in the speakers of my computer which was in idle mode. (screen
blank, hard drive stopped) It came back to life. The cell phone transmits
every so many minutes to tell the system which cell it is in. Today, I put
the cell phone on the desk next to the computer while it was in idle mode. I
left the room. When I came back it was up and running again. I know I did
not hit the desk or vibrate or jar it. I read something that said not to put
the cell phone on your computer. There was no explanation as to why you
should not place your cell phone next to your computer. ???????
