Unable to import video

Hi all
I have a whole bunch of short video clips that play quite happily in media
player and other progs but for some reason won't import to movie maker. I
get the following message

"cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not
installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install
the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the
file again."

So I don't understand how the PC can play the clip in a standalone Winmedia
player but won't play in moviemaker?

I take it there is a piece of software I will need to convert file formats
in the way the article mentions - any one you would recommend?

My only confusion on this is that these seems to be quite random. All the
files I use are MPEG2 but some work and some dont

Thanks again for your help
