Unable to get HP Deskjet working on Vista - HELP

M

Mary

I have a HP Deskjet 5940 which I moved from XP to my new Vista system.

I have downloaded the Vista driver from the HP web site.

I run the driver setup with the printer disconnected. After a few
minutes it asks me to connect the printer and shows a picture of the
printer and PC with the cable.

The progress bar gets to 2/7 in this window then just stops.

I then reboot and Vista says it has found new hardware and asks for
the disc which of course I don't have. I use the option of browsing my
hard disc but this finds nothing.

Eventually it says it can't find a core driver package and suggests I
contact the manufacturer.

In device manager the printer is shown in Other Devices with a
question mark next to it.

I have all Vista updates including the USB KB941600.

HELP - I need my printer.

Any help appreciated

Download the driver again, but do not run it from the download. Save it to a folder that you make
for it first.
Then when the computer asks for the driver, point it to that folder.
