Unable to format

I am hoping someone can help me.... yesterday my antivirus caught 3 Trojan
Horse Downloader viruses that somehow got onto my computer. I have tried to
format the HD so I can reinstall XP but when I try to format through command
prompt, it says the volume is in use by another process, but format can run
if this volume is dismounted first. I click YES to dismount this volume, but
all is does is flash the cursor again and does nothing. I also tried to
format by going into My Computer and right clicking on C: drive, format but
it says it cannot be done.
A friend told me to simply try reinstalling Win XP, which I did....all that
did was install a 2nd version and I still have the same problems.
Today, I now have in excess of 40 of these Trojan Horse Downloader viruses
and can't get rid of them, plus there are programs now in my add/remove file
that I didn't download, and cannot remove. I can surf the Net, but each time
I open a browser page I get a new virus.
Any suggestions ? I cannot afford to take my computer into a shop so any
help would be greatly appreciated.
With Thanks,
Mac

Mac,

Have you started your PC with the XP CD in and booted from the CD Drive. If
you can't, then you will have to access the BIOS to set the CD to boot
before the HDD. Doing this will let you format the drive where you want to
host windows and do a clean install of XP.

If your antivirus cannot remove the viruses , reformatting will. The reason
that you have two versions installed is the installing options that you
chose did not include deleting all partitions and reinstalling on a
formatted drive. Watch the options and reinstall again. To prevent further
mass virus attacks , engage the firewall before you use the internet and use
a good up to date antivirus. JJ

You need to boot of the windows XP disk.. then delete the partition...

This will trash the contents of your disk. Just create a new partition and
continue the new install.
