You've got to do some reading first :)

Things to do prior downloadin/installing SP3.
1.Make an Image backup of the hard drive/Windows Partition before you
install SP3
2.Test your System Restore to see if it is working correctly.
3.Make absolutely sure the machine's free of any hijackware, Trojan, or
virus infections before installing SP3.
4.Run Disk Cleanup then run a Defrag session before installing SP3.
5.Disable all real-time protections (anti-virus; anti-spyware;third-party
firewall) before downloading/installing SP3.
6.Reboot twice after installing SP3.
7.Run another Defrag.

nothing mentioning "The update.ver file is not correct," but thanks I'll

I got a similar error on the second PC that I applied SP3 to. I
downloaded the ISO image from Microsoft and created an SP3 CD. That
worked well, and I can use it again if I find another computer.

You downloaded the what from where?? Seriously though, can you tell me
where to get this ISO ""in search of??" image and at what page on microsoft .
Also -courious---do you wear ear plugs when you ring those bells??

Net: Don't do it! Don't install it! Seriously, you were wondering if these
updates were worth the headache: SP3 crashed my computer over & over, and
caused me nothing but grief. Read some of these other threads and see what
problems others are having. It's NOT WORTH IT. You can still put security
updates on your machine, without SP3. Here's what it did to me: Programs
wouldn't load. Documents wouldn't load. IE7 closed over & over. Norton
Antivirus permanently trashed. Computer crashed 15-20 times over the course
of 2 days. And now, even after uninstalling SP3, I've still had issues to
deal with, mostly that I had to remove NAV completely and go with a different
antivirus program. I'm sure I'll discover more problems, but, seriously,
DON"T INSTALL IT. It's too late for me - save yourself!

I strongly disagree. Everyone *should* install SP3.

Read some of these other threads and see what
problems others are having.

I don't doubt that you had problems, or that others have. There are
always those who have problems with any update. Nevertheless, the
number of those with problems is tiny compared to the number of those
without problems. Those without problems are *always* way
under-represented in the newsgroups. It's only those with problems who
come here to look for help.

Speaking of your problems, did you read here and follow the advice
given before installing SP3? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717
