Unable to download files

I have a new computer that I cannot download files from the internet. When I
start the File Download the "Open" and "Open Folder" bottons are greyed out.
After a short time I get the error message "Internet Explorer cannot download
filename.exe from www.url.com". "The requested site is either unavailable or
cannot be found. Please try again later." I have followed the instructions
found in the help, empty the temp internet folder, but still have the
problem. I am able to download on my old computer without any problems. Any
suggestions?

Hi Tony :)

What version of Windows and IE are you using? What, if any, error messages
are you getting when you try to download? What is the exact wording, if
any? What type of files, or from what sites, are you trying to download
from? What happens when you try to download? What, if any, corrective steps
have you taken so far, and what is the results.

We will be better able to help if you can provide us with as much
information as possible about the problem, what is happening, and what
you've done, so we don't repeat information unnecessarily.

Thank you :)

I am having the same problem: IE 6.0 Sp2 Win XP pro SP2 problem started after
SP2 - error downloading any files:

file download box comes up and says getting file information - after ~ 1 min
error box comes up:
Internet Explorer cannot download ...kb838905-client-enu.exe from
download.mocrosoft.com (or any other site)
Internet explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested
site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.

When I need to download a pdf file, I can copy the short cut and then open
from web page it in acrobat 5. I have not found a work around for exe files
except downloading on a different PC and saving to network drive.
I assume it is a security setting. I turn off the firewall and disable
anti-virus program and nothing helps. THank you, John

Hi John :)

Thank you for the details, it makes it easier to narrow down where to look.

"I Can't Download Anything Since Installing XP Service Pack 2

The service pack 2 for Windows XP takes computer to a new level in
aggressive security. While some of these measures will no doubt make your
computer more secure from hackers, viruses and spyware, it can limit your
Internet experience. One of these measures disables the ability to download
what Microsoft considers 'unsafe' files. Unfortunately, the list of
'unsafe' files includes just about anything available on the Internet today.

It is important at this point I think to make sure you understand that just
because Microsoft has labeled certain types of files as potentially unsafe,
doesn't necessarily mean they pose a threat to your computer. What
Microsoft is actually saying is that these file types have been known in the
past to contain things such as Trojans, viruses and spyware. It is
important that you have adequate protection against these files on your
computer, including personal firewalls and anti virus applications. Don't
depend on Service Pack 2 to be your guard against attack.

All that being said, you will have to make some changes to your Internet
Explorer settings in order to download files since installing Service Pack
2. To do this, click on 'Tools' at the top of this Internet Explorer page.
Click on Internet Options. From there, click on the Security Tab, second
from the left. Now, click on Custom Level. You should see a list of
settings. Scroll down the list until you find the 'Download' settings

Now, the first setting is 'Automatic prompting for file downloads'. If
this setting is disabled, Internet Explorer will automatically REFUSE any
download. Change this setting to 'Enable'. Also, make sure the setting
below, File download is set for 'Enable'. Now, click OK
It is Important that you click 'Apply' at the bottom of the previous page.
Once you've clicked apply, then click ok. You should now be able to
download files."

I have followed each of the suggestions (some have not applied because I am
using IE 6 sp2 and XP Pro SP2) and have checked each of the setting suggested
but as of now still cannot download any files. The only message I get is the

"Internet Explorer cannot download filename.exe from www.url.com". "The
requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again
later."

Remember that both the OPEN and OPEN FOLDER buttons are grayed out, so I
cannot select them. There must be something else that is effecting this
computer and not the other.

How to check HOSTS file

Windows/host (it will not have an extension, and if there is more than one,
choose the one that says Application in a column to the right) . Right click
on it and select Open with.....when the window opens, scroll down the list
to Notepad. Once it opens in Notepad, scroll down the list to see if that
site is in the list. If so, DO NOT delete it, just go to the very front of
the line to the left and enter # in front of the line so that it looks
similar to the one below, as the entries with # in front will be ignored.

# Entries with other comments are searchable via Google.

Then click the save button and close. Then try the site again.
