Unable to display Excel on desktop

I have the same custom desktop on a number of computers. Created using Frontpage it includes a spreadsheet. Until recently it displayed correctly on all computers but recently the one older computer running Windows 2000 stopped showing the spreadsheet and instead shows the outline where it should be and some default icon.

Any idea what might cause this failure?

some possibly relevant info:
- the desktop htm file displays fine on other computers running XP
- alternative desktop designs with the spreadsheet also fail (I have 3 alternative designs available)
- when I open the htm file in Frontpage the spreadsheet shows up on the design tab but not on the preview tab
- the failure affects all users that can log on to the problem computer
- Windows 2000 auto updates to the latest bug releases by Microsoft
- not certain when it first failed as the users said nothing until recently, but I think about 3 or 4 weeks ago
- using Office 2000
- tried deleting the spreadsheet and reinserting it using frontpage to no avail.

Could be a graphics adapter issue. You might try asking them here.

I doubt very much this is the problem. Everthing worked fine until a few
weeks ago and nothing has been installed or changed on this computer for
ages.

My guess is that a recent windows update has blocked some perceived security
hole and in the process prevented IE from displaying this local object but I
can't work out what it is or how to re-enable it.
