Unable to Create Video ... Windows Problem

For the past month I have been on the phone with Roxio, Nero trying to get
answers on how to fix DVD creating part of their software.
I have been trying to create dvd videos with their software and am
unable to do so.
When I installed Roxio 8, everything worked with the software, and I mean
everything that has to do with DVD creation or CD creation. I have been
saving my data on DVDs and CDs. I have been using all its resources to burn
music and videos on DVDs as well.
About 3-4 weeks ago, I tried to run Roxio's DVD creator, I think it's
called Videowave8 which I have been able to use 2 months ago, and it started
the program but never finished the starting process. The hourglass on the
mouse never went away when I would move the mouse onto the program window. I
havn't been able to run any menus or do anything with the program. To quit
the program I was only able to do it by manually shutting down the pc from
the power because Task manager would not end the process either. Logging off
the pc or shutting down normally did not work. Shutdown process would kill
everything on the taskbar, but would not finish the shutdown process because
Videowave8 was still running.
I thought this was a Roxio problem and purchased Nero 6. Same thing
happened with Nero. Everything worked except the DVD Video creation part of
it. Same shut down problems, and hourglass icon for the mouse never went
away.
I bought Nero 7 Ultra Edition. Same problem. The program called
NeroVision which is used to create DVD movies, never started completely, the
taskbar could never end the process and computer would not shutdown unless I
unplugged the power.
I am very puzzled on how ONLY the DVD creation part of these 3 programs
would not work. I have called both companies and I was told to change my
graphics card. I have done so and purchased ATI Radeon X1300 Pro 256MB AGP
8x card, and still get the same problem. Roxio and Nero support told me that
it had to do with Windows XP Pro since other programs had the same problem.
I don't know where else to get help regarding this. Hopefully someone
else had had this problem and can help me out. I appreciate any help in this
matter.
My system is as follows:
Windows XP Pro, Service Pack 2 with all updates. Pentium 4, 3.8GHz
processor, 1500MB Ram, 300GB(132GB free) HDD, and the above graphics card.
Thank you in advance.

Wow, buying a new graphics card because you can't burn DVDs seems a
bit out in left field...It always amazes me to what extent a support
tech will go to get out of a situation :) .

Two things come to mind on this.
the worst would be that you have been shut down with the sony rootkit
or the likes for protecting their music. This thing shuts down any
copying (writing) hardware such as DVD and CD burners. Not to fret as
Sony has been physically drawn and quartered over this and there are
some fixes out there. The problem comes from finding the booger to
begin with as most spyware/malware and virus programs can't see it.
There are some updated programs that can now find it so long as you
have them installed , or you can visit
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_Sony_CD_copy_protection_controversy
and read up on this thing and follow the links to getting rid of it.

The other thing is a slight registry
edit...please back-up the
registry first

go to Run and type regedit then hit enter and navigate
to registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
Highlight it and in the right pane,
find the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values.
Highlight each one in turn, right click and delete them.
Close regedit and restart the computer.

This simple registry editing removes the filters that are sometimes
installed to block you from burning discs either CD's or DVDs

please post back and let us know if these helped or not

Thank you for replying.
I have the following listed:

LOWERFILTERS Data: PxHelp20)
LowerFilters_1 Data: PXHELP20 PFC
LowerFilters.Bak Data: PxHelp20 PFC
UpperFilters.Bak Data: Cdralw2k pwd_2k
UpperFilters_1 Data: GEARAspiWDM

Since I don't have Upperfilters listed I wanted to double check which ones
to delete.
Thanks again
