unable to create system.mdw

I'm using Win98 with Office2000 Standard installed
initially. Serveral months ago, I've upgraded it to
Officexp Professional (with AccessXP application). During
the upgrading process, I got an error similar
to 'MSRCLR40.DLL cannot be registered..', then I
chose 'IGNORE' to go on the installation. Everything seems
fine after the installation, 'cos Excel, Word, Powerpoint
are perfectly running. Even for AccessXP can be loaded
successfully.

However, as I wanted to create a new database from Access,
another error popped up '...working information file
cannot be created. Please make sure the path is correct
and have sufficient permission and disk space for the
file. (-5026)...'.

The fact is that the user already has full permission and
it's using a Win98 OS. There shouldn't be any file
permission problem. So I tried manually creating the
System.mdw in \Windows\System directory from Access. But,
the file were still unable to create due to the same
previous mentioned reason.

Also, I tried the command line switch for AccessXP to load
up with specific System.mdw and even manipulating the
registry for the System.mdw path. This time, the previous
error has gone but with the error '...Jet engines cannot
be started...' instead.

I installed the MDAC 2.8 still cannot solve the problem.
How frustrating! Does anyone know if this situation is
normal for upgrading from Standard 2000 to Prof XP?

Hi Leonard

It sounds like there was a problem with your installation. Try doing a
"Detect and Repair" from the Help menu.

Thanks for your suggestion.

I'm afraid the problem still exists after the 'detect and
repair'. I've also done the registry cleaning suggested by
Microsoft site, and removed all relevant Office files,
inc. those in 'Common files', etc. That means removing all
Office stuff, except those installation history files
generated by system. I don't have a clue how to
selectively and in safe delete those Office-related files
myself.

At last, really didn't want to make this step, I only have
to rebuild the machine in order to use the Access app. I
think the issue is due to the existence of those hidden
system files, which affects the installation of Office of
later version.

Jumping in here: I gather that you can't create a workgroup file? (the
system says it has insufficient permissions or disk space or similar)

Here's what I'd try. Use the workgroup administrator program to try creating
one on a diskette (assuming that you have a diskette drive). If that doesn't
work, it would certainly suggest that there is something wrong with your
installation of Access or Office. But it if >works<, you know that the
"create workgroup file" feature is basically working. Then try creating a
workgroup file in a hard disk folder where you >know< that you can create a
file manually. See what happens then.

Maybe also check the windows temp directory & delete any old temp files.

Also, I vaguely remember that Access (or Jet?) gets upset if the appropriate
environment variable(s) is/are not set up to define the temp directory? One
of those variable is called TEMP. Go to a DOS window & type SET (or SETENV?)
to see what variables are defined.

HTH,
TC
