Unable to copy to cd

I have been unable (recently) to get my dvd/rw cd/rw drive to accept any type
of files using the standard "copy files to". I get the balloon saying you
have files waiting. Go to that window and hit the "cd writing task" and
"write these files to". There is no response when I hit the write to or
delete temporary files.
I've tried varied disks, the IMAPI is correct etc. I've read all the
postings yet am unable to get the drive to work. It will play..but not
record. It is a Sony pcv-rs420 with xp home edition, automatic updates etc.
Do I need to reinstall xp or might the deleteing of "unused" programs gotten
me here.

You have right-clicked the drive letter, clicked PROPERTIES|RECORD TAB, and
enabled same?

Any third-party burner apps installed?
 
Yes the tab is set for recording...as for additional programs..it came with
the "sony vaio" package of digital music, pictures etc. Sonic stage. It has
a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR106D. I think I've covered most of the obvious bases..I
do know I am unable to get the cd writing wizard to appear.
