cannot copy files to cd..checked the usual

I have been unable (recently) to get my dvd/rw cd/rw drive to accept any type
of files using the standard "copy files to". I get the balloon saying you
have files waiting. Go to that window and hit the "cd writing task" and
write these files to". There is no response when I hit the write to or
delete temporary files.
Yes the tab is set for recording...as for additional programs..it came with
the "sony vaio" package of digital music, pictures etc. Sonic stage. It
has a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR106D. I think I've covered most of the obvious
bases..I do know I am unable to get the cd writing wizard to appear.
I've tried varied disks, the IMAPI is correct etc. I've read all the
postings yet am unable to get the drive to work. It will play..but not
record. It is a Sony pcv-rs420 with xp home edition, automatic updates etc.
Do I need to reinstall xp or might the deleteing of "unused" programs gotten
me here.
Thanks for your advice and patience.

Have a look at the threat with the title " 'read only' CD ", posted in this
newsgroup three days ago . It explains, among other things, that the
letters ROM in "CD ROM" stand for "Read Only Memory".

Are you trying to write to CD or DVD disks? The in built software for
XP will only write to CD. DVD requires the use of 3rd party software.

Are you sure that PC doesn't include a "Burning Software' package ?
beyond XP's native CD capability. If need be you can download and
install CDBurnerXP Pro. It's a free package that has nearly all the
features of Nero or Roxio. It does require the .Net Framework to run,
but most XP instances will probably already have that installed. I put
this program on customer's PC who can't or won't buy a commercial
burning program.
