Unable to connect to network drives, however can send emails

I have a laptop that is unable to connect to the network drives. However,
the user can send emails through outlook which means it can connect to the
exchange server, has an IP address, and can ping the server with all the
resources that they need. Any ideas?

Not with that information.

We have no idea how they are sending email through the exchange server and
what type of firewall might be in place (with holes possibly - for the
exchange server, etc.) The protocols for sending email are no where near
the same as the protocols for file sharing. We have no idea where the
process is failing either - all you said is that they are unable to connect
to the network drives... What does that mean? Does it connect and ask for
credentials? Does it not connect to any shares at all, never asking for the
credentials? Etc...

Give us more information on:

- The configuaration of the workstation in question.
- The server where the shares are.
- The network in-between the two.
- Any errors or messages the workstation gets (even from the event log) when
the mapping is attempted.

And if you want to discuss further why the exchange server works but the
file server does not - give us the same information for the mail server in
relation to the workstation as you do for the file server. ;-)
