The System Restore function is a great facility but it has its limitations.
Here is what I do with the machines I'm responsible for:
- I install Windows and all applications on drive C: (partition size=20
GBytes).
- I store all data on drive D:.
- When a new installation is just right, I take a snapshot of drive C:
- Once every six months or so I take a new snapshot.
- I always maintain two snapshots: The current one and the one before.
I store my snapshots on a external USB disk which I keep well away from the
PC most of the time. To create a snapshot I use Acronis TrueImage but you
could use any alternative imaging product. By splitting the disk I get much
smaller image files than I would otherwise.
To recover a thrashed Windows installation, I boot the machine with my
Acronis Rescue CD, then restore the most recent image. This process takes
about half an hour and is guaranteed to work.
