Unable to boot System after power outage

Okay almost a week ago, i had a power outage at home. Now my home pc runs XP
and all the information is still there.... I can boot from a XP disk and
everything is fine. But when i try to run a repair or even an upgrade install
to try to save all the data on the drive, all i get is is halt error
0X000000008E and all i really want is to keep my work and not have to use the
XP disk to boot up. If anyone has any idea how to fix this problem, plz reply.

Hi,

There may have been a power surge and a hardware component may have been
damaged. It will likely need to be diagnosed and replaced by a competent
technician (unless you have the means yourself).

To save data, remove the drive from this unit and install it as a slave in
another. Copy the data you wish to retain off of it onto CD\DVD or other
removable media. Note, you may need to read the steps below to "take
ownership" of the data in order to access it.

Once the hardware that is damaged has been replaced, you should be able to
perform a repair installation (aka "in place upgrade") and retain everything
you started with. The data backup is a good precaution however in case this
does not work. To repair, simply boot the system with the XP CD and start
the installer (do not hit 'r' when initially prompted to repair). When you
get to the point where you choose the installation location, you should then
be prompted to repair an existing installation.
