Hi folks,

I'm trying to reformat my pc and reinstall windows xp, however, for
some crazy reason the pc is refusing to boot from the cd. When i
restart the pc recognises the cd and tells me to press any key to boot
from disk - In the 10000000 + times that I have tried, I have managed
to press most of my keys but with no luck! It just ignores me and boots
as normal.

The keyboard deffo works (as you can tell)

I have also gone into the boot menu and changed the settings to boot
from cd - but the same problem occurs.

Anybody got an idea what I can do?

Cheers for your help guys :-)

I have tried the cd in my own laptop with no problems at all.
Definitely a problem with the pc - I have another pc the same with a
very similar problem

I had this problem with a Dell. The solution was to disable the hard drive
in the BIOS. When the PC booted from the XP CD it was still able to see the
hard drive. I used this method to access the Recovery Console but I see no
reason why it could not be used to load Windows.

Ah, good stuff. I will give it a go

Thanks

Just give it a go but had no luck. The problem lies with the fact that
the pc does not recognise when I am pressing a / many keys to boot from
disk. I disabled everything except from the cd drive and because it
didn't recognise me pressing a key I was stuck on that page.

Strange thing is that the keyboard works fine when entering the BIOS

Any other ideas?

It sounds like the keyboard is not being read at the stage where you
need to make a selection to boot from CD.

Of course if you disabled everything but the CD drive (in the BIOS I
presume) ...? Not sure what you mean by that.

If your current keyboard is USB or wireless there is a potential problem
right there. Personally I wouldn't have anything but a PS2. Try another
keyboard, preferably a PS2, even an old one will do.

That USB problem is USB not enabled at a certain point in the BIOS. and
perhaps the same or a related problem is that a firmware upgrade is
required.
With that problem, you can get into the BIOS, but you can't press F8
and get that menu up. Perhaps you can't press a key , either.
THat F8 issue is solved by - USB is enabled in an obscure part of the
phoenix bios.
Under "integrated peripherals" then under OnChip PCI device.
if that doesn't do it, then consdier a bios ugrade, though it's
unlikely to be the probelm nowadays.

I agree he should try Ps2 . (though I think if ps2 works, he should fix
the usb prob).
Try other bootable CDs in that drive (oens that don't ask to press any
key).

see if F8 works, see if a ps2 keyb woprks, see if other cds boot, try
changing cd drive(unlikely).

and try a differetn non win xp bootable cd in your comp 'cos maybe you
aren't booting off the cd at all. (though it looks like you are booting
off the win xp cd, but still it's worth checking out if this is a BIOS
msg saying 'press any key to boot from cd'. I'd say it's prob booting
off the cd though and it's a win xp message).

Use a standard ps/2 mouse and keyboard when installing an OS.
