Unable to adjust record levels

I have windows XP and when I go to properties then select recording it shows
RECORDING and BALANCE as grey and they can not be adjusted. Is there a way
to change this? Mixer device is Vinyl AC'97 Audio. Any help would be
appreciated.
 
It completely depends on the abilities of your soundcard. If they are greyed
out
than your soundcard does not support it.
 
I have a Soundblaster live 5.1 card that shows the recording balance
controls NOT grayed out, yet they cannot be adjusted. The Soundblaster web
site help said the record balance controls were not adjustable on my card.

Suggest you contact the soundcard manufacturer to see just what it can
support.

Also, see if you can select a different mixer device via control panel. The
mixer device you are choosing may not be for your sound card -- just a
second thought.
