Unable to access Microsft sites

Guest

I have recently replaced my main home computer that acts as an internet
gateway for others in the house. I have re-run the network setup wizard on
all computers, however, on 2 seperate laptops I cannot access any Microsoft
sites (windows update,MSN, Messenger, hotmail)although I can access the
internet perfectly well. Is this a .NET Passport problem & if so how do I
overcome it?

Hi Phil :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Trouble logging into Hotmail

http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_10.htm#hotmail

and...

Tools>Internet Options>Security>Advanced>Custom Level> change each of the
ActiveX Controls setting respectively down the list to the following:

Change the following in order:
Prompt
Disable
Disable
Prompt
Prompt

also......

Remove MSN Messenver v6.2

and.....

#1.-- You need to be logged on as an Administrator if running Windows XP
(have Full Rights) otherwise you will be limited to "Chat" and will not be
able to Modify/Delete/Change Files or transfer/send or receive files,
E-mails etc.

#2.-- Go To START >RUN> type in the Input window: ReGsvr32.exe softPUB.DLL "

#3.-- Change the Internet Explorer Settings: Tools>Internet
Options>Security>Setting> and set to Medium or Low...

#4.-- Uninstall MSN Messenger... Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>
find MS Messenger and uninstall it.

#5.-Repair Internet Explorer. Then reinstall MSN messenger... NOT the beta
v6.

#6.-- If you are using a proxy, make sure the settings are correct. If you
use LAN, then check to be sure the "Proxy server" box is Unchecked.

Can't connect to MSN Messenger

This solution should work for most firewalls, provided the access is not
restricted by domain name, and access to regedit is possible.

Click on Start --> Run
Type in "regedit" and then click OK (without the " )

Navigate through the registry editor to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger

Select the "Server" key, Right click, and select "Modify"

Change the value data to:
gateway.messenger.hotmail.com:80

This will connect MSN on port 80, the http port, is working perfectly for me
behind a draconian ISP firewall.

Go in Tools > Internet Options>Click on "Security", select "Internet" and
then "Custom Level"
Search for "Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins" and disable it.

Disabling this will prevent Hotmail from showing the MSN Messenger status
near your email adress on your hotmail account. If it is disabled, MSN
Messenger wont be asked to run which is most-likely the cause of the
problem.

If that works for you, then:

If you have MSN Messenger installed, and you don't use it, you might try
disabling or uninstalling it and then see if Hotmail then works with ActiveX
enabled. (You need ActiveX for Windows Update, etc.) Read all of the
following carefully.

1. See here to disable it: How to prevent Windows Messenger from running
on a Windows XP-based computer
http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?id=302089 Read carefully.

2. A simpler method to completely uninstall it if you don't use it which
you may want to try (rather than messing around in the Registry to just
disable it unless you're very comfortable with that) is to be sure you Exit
from Messenger by right-clicking the MSN icon in the notification area, and
selecting Exit. Then go to Start|Run then enter exactly (I would copy/paste
it):

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %systemRoot%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then uninstall the leftover installation information file by going to
Start|Run then entering:

rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection BLC.Remove 128
%systemRoot%\inf\msmsgs.inf

Then reboot.

3. If you wish, you can ensure that MSN Messenger is shown in Add-Remove
Windows Components so that you can restore it at some later time if you so
desire by going to Start|Run and entering:

notepad.exe %systemRoot%\INF\sysoc.inf

When this file opens in Notepad, look for a line that starts "msmsgs="
and then delete the word "hide" if there and go to File|Save, then exit
Notepad.

Then reboot.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

No luck with any of this, it seems to be mainly directed at Microsoft
Messenger, but I cannot access Windows update as well as MSN, Messenger and
Hotmail. None of the settings on the laptops were altered prior to installing
the new gateway computer and they had both been working perfectly prior to
this. The only thing altered on them was network settings when I ran the
network wizard after installing the new computer. Any ideas??

thanks

Phil
