Unable to access encrypted web pages

Brad

Some background first: My father recently installed
Spyware and Adaware on his PC. After installing and
running the applications he no longer was able to access
any encrypted websites (128 bit) or use MSN Messenger (it
will not let him log into it or AOL Messenger).

He immediately removed the applications but the problem
still exists.

He is running XP Pro and Explorer 6.

We have already been through all his Internet Settings and
everything is set to the default when it comes to
security, etc.

He tried installing another browser (evil Netscape) and
got the same results.

I know that isn't much to go on - as I myself have been
trying to offer him long distance phone support - but that
is all I can offer.

Does anyone have any suggestions/ideas??

Copy/paste the following line into an IE Addressbar on the problem machine,
click on GO, then copy/paste the results into your reply:

javascript:navigator.appMinorVersion

Thanks

Here are the results of the test (we did it twice - same
results both times):

;SP1;Q810847;Q813951;Q813489;Q330994;Q818529;Q822925;Q82875
0;Q824145;Q832894;

I have noticed several other similar posts the past few
days of people being unable to login to sites that require
passwords or that are 'secure' - could this be stemming
from the same problem?

Please take the machine to Windows Update as many important security updates
and patches are missing (e.g., Q831167, which should solve the problem).

To assure a clean install, your anti-virus application should be disabled
and all other running processes closed before going to Windows Update and
when downloading/installing from any MS page.
