My home PC has XP service Pack 1 with a Broadband
Internet Connection and I haven't been able to access the
internet for a few days. Having spent a couple of hours
trying to diagnose the problem with my ISP, they have
said that everything appears OK and that it may a Windows
Socket error.

The symptoms are that if I try to ping www.bbc.co.uk then
I get 'host not found' and if I ping 212.58.224.114 then
I get 'time outs'.

We have tried refreshing my IP address, done XP system
restore to a timepoint when the Internet Connection was
definitely working, and the ISP say that they can 'see'
my modem. We have checked that DHCP Client is started and
the broadband modem is OK in device manager. I even
removed my firewall software.

Any help would be appreciated.

you probably got hit with one of the Adware/SPYware programs and the removal
of it caused the winsock problem. Removing and reinstalling TCP/IP doesn't
help

Do a search on Google for "Winsock fix XP spyware" and you should find a few
tools to fix this problem

Many thanks Jordan - I will check this out.
