Not good. Usually when this happened to us it meant the scanner has died.
(Believe it or not some UMAX scanners die like this all the time! *gulp*)
Does the scan light come on while you scanning? (lift the lid when you scan)
I really don't think its the driver, but you can install the IHV's driver in
place of the inbox driver if you wanna check it out: If you want to use
UMAX's TWAIN driver, you must first goto
device Manager and remove the inbox WIA driver. Then install the UMAX
package. Once you've done this though, the Scanner and Camera Wizard is
useless for you (because XP can only enumerate WIA drivers).

yes the scan light comes on, the scanner goes through all
the motions but the page is black, my camera works fine
under WIA so bet your right, time to bury it.
