Ultima and 4 GB RAM - miss 1 GB

Hello,

I have a Gigabyte mainboard with 4 * 1 GB RAM modules. When I start the PC I
get the message 4 GB - memory okay.

When I start Vista Ultima, Vista showes only 3071 MB. I miss 1 GB. Where is
it? The graficcard is A NVidia 7600 with 256 MB.

Any idea?

Thanks,

Matthias

Hi Matthias,

I also have 4GB of RAM installed, and when I first put my new rig together
this past week, I had the exact same "problem". But it's not a problem in
the end. After scratching my head and testing my RAM modules in every config
imaginable (to check if any was DOA), I realized that the 763MB that were
missing from the readout in Windows (it shows 3325MB on my computer) was due
to the shared video memory. I checked my graphics card properties and...it
said that I had 763MB of shared memory. "Problem" solved.

Hope this eases your mind, because I certainly felt better once I knew my
RAM wasn't at fault.

Hi Matthias,

Normal for an x86 system, it's a limitation of 32-bit addressing. Some of
the addresses are reserved by the system for internal processes, the
installed ram gets the remainder.
