UDF Reader Ruining CDs

I have some software on a fax server called AutoSave that burns
certain files to a CD-RW as they are received. I format the discs with
Roxio Easy CD Creator 5. All of the files seem to get written to the
CD correctly, but when I take it out and try to access this CD on any
other machine it says it has to install UDFReader. I understand it
needs to do this in order to read the CD on machines lacking a reading
software for this format, however it seems that whenever I try to
access these CDs there are only 3 files on the whole thing.

udfrchk.exe
autorun.inf
udfrinst.zl

I cannot get to the hundreds of faxes that were burned to it
throughout the week. It's like the file structure gets destroyed or
something and they can't be read. Has anyone else experienced this or
know of a solution. This is supposed to be my backup solution, and I
am now realizing it's not working out very well. I try to access these
CDs on Windows 98 and on XP.

Thanks,

Brian Mosher

In my admittedly limited experience, I've seen that drag/drop and copying
files to a CDRW in Explorer rarely allows the CD to be readable on another
computer. I'm not a fan of it - I prefer to use the CD burning software to
manually create the CD.

Do you see all the files on the CD on the computer on which you created it?

Hi :)
Exactly wich Fax-machine is it ?
One thing you could try to do, is to uninstall all UDF-software on your
computer, and try to run the udfrchk.exe located on the disc.

"I format the discs with"

what do you mean by that statement?
are you formating for packet writing?
if so then you will have to drag and drop the files you
want to burn to the roxio tray icon.
the built in xp burning software doesn't support packet
writing.

The UDF format you get is dependent on what UDF writer you're using, so
if you are preparing the disks with Roxio you should also write to them
with Roxio and read them with Roxio's UDF reader. There may be a
workaround to your problem, but I don't know - I'd ask in
comp.publish.cdrom.software.

The fax server runs LightningFAX 7.0 as the interface. Each time a fax
comes into one of our 6 lines, it is supposed to be written to the CD.
It does this fine, but as soon as I take it out of that CD drive, it
will not read on any other machine. I tried uninstalling the UDF stuff
and running that udfrchk.exe and it just wants to install the reader
again.

I took over for the guy that set this whole thing up and was told
that I needed to format the CDs with the Roxio software before they
could be used. I know that using Explorer you can just throw a bunch
of files on the CD and then click on the "write these files to CD" and
it does everything automatically. But this autosave software writes a
file each time a fax comes in.

Yes, i suppose i am formatting it for packet writing.

I'm not dragging and dropping anything. This is the point of the
Autosave program that writes a file to the CD everytime one arrives.
It's sort of like a rule in outlook that prints an email everytime one
is received. It automates the process. The problem is then with
reading it later, not with the writing. You can see that it wrote a
whole bunch of info if you look at how much it burned. But then if you
explore the CD it only shows those 3 files.

writing.
The fax server is NT Workstation

When you format the CD-RW, you are using Roxio's DirectCD. In order to
read the CD's on another machine, you will need Roxio's DirectCD. You
should then be able to see all the files on the CD.

That I think is just a program that has been put on the CD to check for
the presence of the udfreader program. You can find the program itself
at Roxio's site
http://www.roxio.com/en/support/ecdc/software_updatesv4.jhtml
and right at the bottom of the page - UDF Volume reader
and may need to install it on the machine concerned in advance
