Typing special characters in Internet Explorer

I am able to type characters like an e with an accent on Notepad and Word,
but I am not able to do so in Internet Explorer. In Internet Explorer I am
only able to type characters that go from alt + 1 to alt + 9. Any ideas?
 
Rightclick the page, then Encoding, to chose a language for those characters.
