Using a language learning website, i have to type french words and then am
marked on their accuracy. However, I dont know how to type the special
characters (accents). I can do this in word, but not in other applications.

Try Character Map.

Click on the Windows Start menu, then All Programs (Start » All
Programs) on the lower left of your screen. Select Programs »
Accessories » System Tools » Character Map.

There's more than one way to do this, and some are much more convenient than
others.

I use a little freeware background program called AllChars. This lets me (in
all applications) type many common special characters (many of these are
used in other languages) by pressing the ctrl key followed by a two
character mnemonic combination.

For example, for ñ the two characters are ~ and n. For ç it's c and , For ü
it's u and "
