I have Word 2000 and wish to create documents in the French language, in
particular accents and graves on individual characters. I am aware of how to
do this by using the character map/insert symbol. Is there a way I can
customise Word to auto-detect a language and include the accents?

You need to setup a French keyboard in Windows and as you (probably) don't
know the French keyboard layout, you can use the on-screen keyboard to show
the key positions. The accented keys are then on the number row of the
keyboard (numbers are activated by pressing shift). Then set the language at
the cursor to French and switch to the French keyboard. If you have a lot of
this to do it may be worrth buying a French keyboard.
