Click the ¶ button on the toolbar, or press Ctrl+Shift+*, or go to Tools >
Options > View and uncheck all the boxes in the Formatting Marks section of
the dialog.

I would although recommend viewing the formating marks. And as much as
possible of them. This will make you better see what word thinks you have
meant like if you have more than one space in a row and where and how many
tab marks you have etc.

At first it might be confusing but at least I quickly discovered their
usefulness and the times I now write in word I can't live without them. I
also often see bad formating in documents i get from others that have hid the
formating marks

Exactly my philosophy. If most of the people who send me files could see
what they look like when I view them, I would hope they would be embarrassed
(I expect they might at least be surprised). These are the people who don't
seem to care that their one-page letter, when I print it, prints an extra
blank page (which presumably they either didn't notice or couldn't figure
out how to remove).
