The Microsoft Equation Editor comes with Office but isn't installed by
default.
In the Add/Remove Programs dialog, select Office and click the Change
button. When you reach the page that lets you select a custom install,
choose that. Find the Equation Editor under Office Tools and set it to run
from your computer, then click the Update button.
After the installer completes, you'll find the editor listed as "Microsoft
Equation 3.0" in the Insert > Object dialog, or you can use the Tools >
Customize dialog to put an icon for it in a toolbar.
An alternative is to buy MathType at
www.mathtype.com (there's a free
time-limited trial there). It's much more capable than the Equation Editor.
