Type to Active Drop Down Box

I created a drop down box and I can select from the list by clicking on the
down arrow with my mouse, but I can't activate the drop down by tabbing over
to it and then typing in letters and then hitting enter to select a word from
the list. What can I do to activate it using the keys on my keyboard?

After tabbing into the dropdown field, press Alt+down arrow to open the list.
