Two styles of numbering on one line

Can't for the life of me remember how to do this. It's been too long. Can
someone help?

What I need is:

1.
2. (a)
(b)
etc.

Format...bullets and numbering...outline numbnered...If that's what you
wnated. Also, you can set up how to outline number within that dialogue box
by clicking on 'customize'

I suppose I should have been clearer. I am already using styles, but need
two levels of outline numbering to appear on one line.

Level 1 = 1.
Level 2 = (a)
Need to show --> 1. [which is a level 1] and beside it, (a) [which is a
level 2]
and the next paragraph should be (b) underneath and the numbering to run
smoothly.

This is Outline Numbering as previously advised.
You don't have two styles on one line you have the "level 2" style which
happens to display the "level 1" number because you selected it to within the
Outline Numbering Customise settings.
The format of 2(a) is totaly up to you, check out the customise settings and
have a play.
Hopefully you are using styles to definine the "level 1" and "level 2" as
this will make the operation much easier and resilient.

something about the hidden paragraph markers, but couldn't remember the
details to use it for the life of me.
