Two shortcuts on desktop

G

Gordon

I copied shortcuts from the start menu to the desktop.
When I logged back in there were two shortcuts for each
application (two for Word, two for Adobe etc). When I
erased one, the other shortcut did not work!

What can I do? I have already tried the following:
1. Creating shortcuts from Explorer using the send to
button.
2. Erasing and recreating my user account.
3. Putting the shortcuts in just my user
account "Desktop" folder.
4. Putting the shortcuts in just the "All user" folder.

This is a new computer operating Windows XP Home edition.
This is such a simple problem yet quite frustrating.

I don't know why it happens or why my cure works but, when two icons are
created, delete one, then go to the recycle bin and r-click the deleted icon
and choose restore. Then you should have just one icon on the desktop that
works. Strange but, it works for me.

Hi Gordon,

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersi
on\Explorer\User Shell Folders

Change CommonDesktop from:
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Desktop

To:

CommonDesktop
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop

Hi Kelly,

Thanks for the tip. That has been a minor problem ever since I went to XP
but, not a real big deal, since I stumbled on my little "shade tree
mechanic's" solution.

I can fix it the right way now, thanks to you.

Cheers, JAX
