Two questions- Aligning windows and sharing programs

I have two questions.

1. Someone told me that there's a way to align the Windows in Vista so that
its's like they're 3D. Does anyone know what he's talking about?

2. Is there a way to tweak the registry or something to make programs
recognized in Vista? Meaning, Windows Security doesn't know my Anti-Virus
software is installed, I can't get online through my dial-up connection, etc.
How do you do this?

Thanks.

(BTW, for those who realized that I already posted something saying that
Vista wasn't working, this is a different computer.)

There's a Flip3D thing that you can get to by pressing the WindowsKey+Tab.

I wouldn't recommend running any utility or security programs on Vista
unless they were specificaly written for Vista. XP apps are OK. But programs
the work closer to the metal could cause a heap of problems. Best to leave
them off altogether.

Thanks for answering my first question. As far as the second one goes, it is
an XP app, but Vista isn't seeing it. I don't know if this has anything to do
with it, but when I run my dial-up program (Net Zero) by opening up the
program in Program Files on my XP Drive (it's C: in XP, obviously, but it has
a different letter in Vista) it starts dialing and says, "Another program is
using the modem" or something like that.

Trying to run an app that isn't installed in Vista, or is installed but
trying to run it directly from the .exe file in XP's Program Files folder,
is extremely unlikely to work. Seems to me you need to download and install
that program to Vista. Or ask NetZero what they suggest. Even that kind of
simple program works a little closer to the metal than your standard app,
because there are device drivers involved. And the drivers have to be for
Vista, not XP.

So should I re-install all of my apps and programs from Vista, but install
them to the XP partition in the program files folder, therefore re-writing
them? And how would I install drivers for my modem, etc. if I can't get
online to download them? Is there a way to download them in XP and run the
setup file from Vista? Thanks.

Yes, you should re-install non utility/security apps from your Vista
desktop. (Stay away from utiltiy/security programs that weren't specifically
written for Vista). When asked where to install, just use the default
folder. Do not tell it to install on the XP drive. Your XP installation is
irrelevant to your Vista installation. So just try to forget XP is available
on that machine.

As far as drivers go, there's no point in installing any of them unless
they're Vista drivers. You just have to hope a driver exists and is
downloaded automatically. Or, if it isn't, go to the device manufacturer's
Web site and see if that have a Vista driver available.

Ok. That makes sense. When you say "default folder" though, do you mean
Vista's C drive? Because I only partitioned it for around 10 GB. The other
partition has the rest of the 250 GB, so I'd rather install it on that drive
through Vista, forgetting that any other operating system is on that drive.
Is that a problem?

Yeah, you can install it one some other hard drive. Just don't install it in
the \Program Files folder for XP.

I did the same thing on my first install. 10 gigs. After PC Cillan was
installed I couldnt install anything else. I just formatted it and started
over with 70 or 80 gigs just to be sure. If you havent gotten too far into
it, then you might want to concider starting over with alot more space on
your Vista partition.

Because I only partitioned it for around 10 GB.

For what it's worth, I went for 40 GB on the Vista partition, 40 GB for XP,
then everything else for documents you'll be using in both OS's. I was able
to get all of Office 2003 and Office 2007, my graphics program, and all my
other basic tools on both partitions with room to spare.

I have also installed Vista RC1 on a partioned drive, Vista now identifys as
"C" drive, even though I set it up as "F" with PartionMagic. That's one
question.....
but, if I understand you correctly, I would need to reinstall every program
that I have installed on the original XP drive, is that correct? I cannot
run any or my already installed programs on the original drive in Vista?

To answer your first question, depending on how you created the partition
will determine how it's read and what letter is assigned. I've installed a
second primary partition without using a boot menu and whichever operating
system I used it recongnized the default operating system as being on on
drive C:. If you install using the boot menu then usually it will keep the
other drive letter. For example, in my case Win XP is drive C and Windows
Vista is Drive H

To answer your second question, most program installed under Vista would
have to be reinstalled to run on XP. There are some exceptions. I can run
Pac man from either system using the same folder on XP. However if you have
two partitions, one being XP and the other Vista than you don't have to
reinstall the programs installed on XP. Just boot to XP and run whatever you
installed there. However is you installed new programs on Vista that you
don't have on XP, you would have to reinstall them to run on XP. Again,
there are some exceptions.
