Two problems with XP SP3

I started with Win XP 32bit sp2 everything running fine, installed
sp3 and ran into two problems:
First - windows explorer was very slow in displaying file names - this
occurred in explorer itself, but also in any file dialog. This
problem has cleared up - I am not sure which of the various things did
it - I changed the display options, but have set them all back - I
increased the page space from the system managed, installed net
framework 2.00. In any case, the problem seems to have completely
gone away and everything is running fine except:

Second problem - Quickbooks 2003 AND 2005 (the only versions I have
tried) BOTH take five minutes to load! Once the program is loaded,
it works fine and I can change company files without any delay at all.
It has nothing to do with the data file. Something is delaying in
the program load. I reinstalled 2005, but no improvement. I have
googled everything I could think of, but can find nothing.

One peculiar thing: while the Loading Quickbooks window is on the
screen for a while, the Explorer window "blinks", i.e. the files
panel is reset. I have never seen this behaviour before. But then, I
have never had to sit here for five minutes watching either.

(To answer the inevitable question, I am an accountant and run
multiple versions of qb on multiple files because that is what my
clients have.)

Thanks for reading my problem and I hope you have a suggestion,

Bob Taylor,
For your QuickBooks problem, after getting QuickBooks running.
1. Check under the program's Options/Preferences/Settings/Tools button. See
if there is a setting to look for updates every time you boot-up. You might
have to change the feature for getting updates, or even turn it off, and
then on a regular basis manually check for updates.
2. Or to connect to files on a network or internet at start-up. If (data)
files or folders are not locally stored on your PC, but are at another
location on your network, something on the network might be slowing down the
start-up process for QB.

Instead of using Windows Explorer try using Xplorer2Lite or Free
Commander - much better .

Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these
Web pages.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.
