two "network connections" in control panel

M

Mark G.

in my control panel (category view or classic view) i have two network
connections icons. they both say "Network Connections" and they both do
essentially the same thing (one opens network connections in the same
window, the other in a new additional window).

my other xp computers only have one, which opens network connections in the
same window.

any ideas why i have this additional one, and how to get rid of it?

also, most of the icons in the control panel of my laptop are different than
in my desktop (for the control panel classic view - category view looks the
same). they are both winxp pro with service pak 2. not sure why, but....
any ideas about this?

thanks,

mark

If you have Network plus 1394 firewire, you have two normally.
If you connect two pc`s with 1394 plus network your speed jumps to 1.5 GPS
and that is very handy.

This is very common, Mark and doesn't cause any harm. More info:

This tweak is useful for uncluttering your Control Panel and removing unused
functions: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\don't load

Network Connections = ncpa.cpl and/or nwc.cpl

Add a key named: don't load. Next add String values within the don't load
Key. You will use one String value for each control panel applet you want
removed.

To restore a full control Panel to default just delete the "don't load" key.

Here are the Windows XP Pro Control Panel applets:
System Properties = sysdm.cpl
Network Connections = ncpa.cpl
ODBC Administrator = odbccp32.cpl
Display Properties = desk.cpl
Add or remove programs = appwiz.cpl
Internet Properties = Inetcpl.cpl
Game Controllers = joy.cpl
Phone and modem Options = telephon.cpl
Time and Date Properties = timedate.cpl
Region and Language Options = intl.cpl
Power Options = powercfg.cpl
Mouse Properties = main.cpl
Accessibility Options = access.cpl
Add Hardware Wizard = hdwwiz.cpl
Sound and Audio Devices = mmsys.cpl
User Accounts = nusrmgr.cpl
Speech Properties = sapi.cpl
