TWO LAN ICONS IN SYSTEM TRAY

Why is my Local Area Network connection not functioning?
Can I delete it and build another? I have two LAN
connection icons in my task bar (system tray)and only the
winpoet one works. The LAN is dead. My problem just
started after approximately three years of DSL working
perfectly. I am using Windows 2000 pro with a Linksys
Etherfast Cable/DSL Router. In the past when I booted up
my LAN connection was active and I could jump to the net
or use my email. The last time I booted up, I got the old
familiar page in IE 6"The page can not be displayed". I
cycled my modem and router, and computer, as I have done
in the past, by turning them off and waiting three minutes
before turning them back on. Nothing worked ! I
disconnected my router and hooked my modem directly to my
computer without the router. I then went to control panel
and found two connectoids. One for LAN and one for
Winpoet. Since the LAN no longer worked, I clicked on he
Winpoet icon whereby it started to verify user name and
password with Earthlink, my ISP. It connected and I am
able to browse and receive my email. HOWEVER, I now have
two icons in my system tray and both now flash when
transferring data. How can I get my system back to normal
and what could have happened to cause such a mess. I want
to be able to boot up and have my LAN active again and
then be able to once again connect my router to my
network! Thank you for any help you might give me.
