There are two huge files in my C: drive, both about 2,095,000 KB. One is
called hiberfil.sys, the other pagefile.sys. Can someone tell me what they
do?

Pagefile.sys is your paging file, hiberfil.sys is your hibernation
file. Both are required by Windows.

If you don't use Hibernation, turn it off, viz. Right-click Desktop >
Properties > Screen Saver Tab > Power at the bottom > Hibernate Tab and
untick ‘Enable Hibernation’.
