Hi

The hiberfil.sys file can be deleted by turning off Hibernation:

Go to Control Panel>Power Options>Hibernate and uncheck 'Enable
Hibernation'. Disk space equal to the amount of RAM you have installed will
be released.

It WAS there. That is the page file needed for Virtual memory support.
You must Not delete it, but it may be starting off larger than needed
(though you need headroom for it to grow, and I would tidy up the disk
to release more space - use
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup)
See www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm

That is used to save the content of memory if you close and Hibernate.
If you do not do this, go to Control Panel, Power Options Hibernate page
and uncheck Enable. On Apply, the file will go

Almost certainly it *was* there last week, and has been since
Windows was first installed.

No, you definitely should not. It's an important system file that
provides you the ability to page. You may, however, be able to
make it smaller. But first answer two questions:

1. How much RAM do you have? Probably 512MB from the way you
described your hiberfil.sys.

2. What apps do you run?

same with the hiberfil.sys...about 500 MB...

That file is need if you sometimes hibernate the system. If you
don't, you can get rid of it in Control Panel | Power Options |
Hibernate. Uncheck "Enable Hibernation."

i need the space!

Between these two files, you are talking about a little over 1GB,
a very small amount of space. If space is that tight for you, you
have a severe problem that needs a more permanent solution.
Getting an extra 1GB free would at best be only a stopgap
measure. You clearly need to buy a new hard drive.
