Two HP DVDs Causes Blue Screen

I have an HP DVD 420i - converted to USB 2.0 via an external enclosure - and
an HP DVD630e, which is already USB 2.0 and external. I have a Maxtor
four port USB 2.0 board in a computer that boots Windows 2000. I can plug
the DVD420i enclosure and use it, but within maybe five seconds of plugging
in the DVD630e I get a blue screen of death, and the message complains about
a possible bad driver.

What would cause the blue screen just from the presence of the two USB DVD
drives simultaneously on the same USB 2.0 adapter?

Just a couple of guesses: bandwidth contention, power draw on the
adapter. Are individual drivers installed? Does the OS "see" the
drives identified correctly when connected individually, and what driver
does each use?

Just a couple of guesses: bandwidth contention,

That shouldnt produce a blue screen, just poor thruput.
power draw on the adapter.

Again, that shouldnt produce a blue screen either.

Yeah, its much more likely to be a driver issue.

What was the blue screen error text?

"Plug and play detected an error most likely associated with a bad driver."
There are some stop codes as well, but I'm not sure those matter here.

I get the blue screen even when I plug in the device by itself. (I first
remove the DVD that works and then separately plug in the DVD630E...blue
screen at the very first plug and play notification, within just
seconds....)

I don't find this device in the Windows 2000 device list. Unfortunately,
it looks like HP isn't distributing the drivers for free anymore, but
instead requires you to order a CD from them, so once I get that I can
experiment with doing the install from the HP CD and seeing if that affects
the outcome.
